GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for beating his mother to death with a hammer in her Greer home.
A jury found Walker Hughes guilty of murder on Friday.
During this week's trial, prosecutors said Hughes had a bad relationship with his 64-year-old mother, Karen, that got worse after she and his father got divorced in 2009. Authorities say Hughes also had drug problems and often stole money.
Hughes testified in his own defense, giving a detailed account of what he did for two days in April 2011 when his mother was killed. He said he looked at several Walmart stores for a woman that might have had his child and spent the night in a motel doing drugs with two other women.
