40 bats removed from Orangeburg hospital after sightings

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) -

An Orangeburg hospital spokeswoman said a colony with 40 bats was removed from an unoccupied hospital room.

The Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Jane Carson said the hospital is working with bat removal experts to get all bats out of the hospital.

"There have been no reports of harm to patients, visitors or staff, and there have been no sightings today," Carson said Friday.

The hospital reported Tuesday that it was likely the bats entered during a recent roofing project. Carson said the bats were found in an unoccupied room on one wing of the third floor.

"A netting barrier is being placed around the hospital to keep bats from getting back inside," Carson said. "We have identified what we think to be the source and have eliminated a colony from the walls of a room."

The hospital remained open despite the sightings and a S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control investigation.

"RMC is working closely with several divisions of DHEC, including the Bureau of Certification and the Acute Disease Epidemiology team," Carson said.
