Towing company owners charged with price gouging during storm

TRAVELERS REST, SC (WYFF) - The owners of an Upstate towing company are accused of price gouging during the recent snow in the Upstate, according to arrest warrants obtained by WYFF News 4 Investigates.

Melissa and Ricky West own Countrywide Towing in Travelers Rest and are charged with price gouging during an emergency, the warrants said.

According to the warrants, the Wests overcharged two victims during a declared state of emergency issued by Gov. Nikki Haley.

The incidents happened on Jan. 29, the warrants said.

According to the warrants, in one case the couple charged Sally Mattaliano $1,167.50 for towing a car from the roadway. 

Mattaliano spoke with WYFF News 4 Investigates Tim Waller on Wednesday.  She said her car got stuck in the ice on Highway 276 near the Duncan Chapel Fire Department in Travelers Rest.

"I said, 'What? To tow my car was that much?'" Mattaliano said.

In another case, the warrants said the couple charged a victim $892.50 for towing a car from the roadway.

The warrant said the standard prices in the region for an accident tow is $230.
