Inspector General launches investigation involving SC State University

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) -

State Inspector General Patrick Maley said he met with SC State University Chairman William Small Tuesday.

Maley declined to say what the meeting was about and what their office was looking into.

The Inspector General's Office investigates allegations of waste, fraud, abuse, mismanagement and wrongdoing and the office has investigatory power over all state agencies.

"There have been some issues that have been raised and as the process unfolds we will be totally willing to report publically on what those activities are, but I don't think it's appropriate to speak to a matter that is in process," Small said. "We acknowledge that they were here yesterday. I'm sure they may tell you what they're doing, if they do that's fine, but I won't."

The SC State Board of Trustees met Wednesday to discuss the university's financial shortfall and ways to close the gap.

In a letter to the director of the State Budget Division, the university projected a deficit of $4.4 million by the end of the fiscal year and is also $13 million short of cash to pay its bills. The primary cause is due to enrollment estimates that did not materialize.

Some solutions the university proposed to the trustees include hiring freezes, reduce discretionary spending and ask the state for more funding.
