Army Sergeant surprises 8-year-old son at school

A West Columbia third grader got a very special surprise at school Thursday.

It was on Jordan Mims' last birthday when his dad, Army Sgt. Stephen Mims was deployed to Afghanistan.

After a long road home Sgt. Mims surprised Jordan at school for a 8th birthday do-over.

Mims said he got stuck in Charlotte due to the winter storm, so he decided to drive back home.

"They [canceled my flight] like two or three times," Mims said. "I got stranded. We landed in Charlotte and I drove from there. I wanted to get here. I couldn't wait any longer."

Mims said it didn't take long to spot Jordan.

"I was looking for him when he came in… Where's Jordan? Where's Jordan?" Mims said. "I'm just glad to be back."

Mims, who has been deployed three times, said it doesn't get any easier leaving loved ones.

"This one, it wasn't really hard leaving, but as the time went, it got really hard being that he has diabetes and wondering what was going on the whole time," said Mims, who was staying with a relative for two days leading up to the surprise. "I was home but not at home. Let's just hope there's nothing else that will pull me away, because I'm not ready to go, but if I have to I will."
