COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina Department of Transportation crews are preparing for a winter storm system that will cause dangerous driving conditions in several parts of the state.

Crews have begun pre-treating major routes in many areas of the state. In addition, they are preparing plows for snow removal.

As of Tuesday morning, personnel have dropped 77 tons of salt, 98 tons of sand, almost 18,000 gallons of calcium chloride and 154,000 gallons of salt brine.

Crews will work around the clock on twelve-hour rotating shifts until the roads are clear. The shift work began this morning.

If necessary, transportation officials will move equipment and personnel throughout the state to areas where need is critical.

Just under 1,600 employees are available, including construction personnel who are assisting maintenance personnel with winter storm activities.
