MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The average utility bill for a Memphis resident has increased about 22 percent from December to late January because of cold temperatures, according to MLGW.

Starting Monday, the company will throw some residents a lifeline.

"It's been so cold out here bills are constantly going up," said resident Aaron Burrows.

Burrows says he can hardly afford to pay his bill. Although, with MLGW'S relaxed deferred payment plan, he can get help.

"Memphis usually does not have these kind of cold temps, but then this is happening all over the country, and MLGW stepped up to help our customers," said MLGW Director Corporate Communications Gail Jones-Carson.

Starting Monday MLGW's new policy will lower the requirements for deferred payment plans from $500 to $250 or more dollars owed.

"Normally, you have to have a balance of $500 or more to be on the deferred payment plan ... With the relaxed payment plan the person can only owe as little as $250," said Jones-Carson.

The customer would pay 25 percent of their balance owed and the rest would be spread out over a five-month period.

"It helps people out some people still struggling. I think it's a great idea to come up with 'cause I even could use more assistance right now," said Burrows.

To get on this plan, customers have to go to MLGW locations and get set up on the plan. Payments must be made by cashier's check, money order, or in cash.

This deferred payment plan begins Monday January 27 and will last until February 28.
