ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

An Orangeburg County man is charged with child neglect after an infant in his care was taken to the emergency room with burns so severe, the child was flown to the Augusta Burn Center.

According to the incident report with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to The Regional Medical Center on December 27th by a doctor concerned about the child's injuries. The boy's aunt took him to the emergency room because of third degree burns from his waist to his feet. She told the doctor Forrest Shuler called her to pick up the child.

The arrest report says the aunt told the doctor Shuler said he was giving the one-year-old a bath and he went to get something. When he returned to the bathroom, Shuler said the child must have turned on the hot water.

An arrest indicated Shuler is the child's father. A sheriff's department spokesperson says that is not true.

"He is not the father of the victim," said Keisa Peterson.

The baby was flown to the Augusta Burn Center for treatment.

Shuler is charged with child neglect.
