The mystery over what is happening to the space currently occupied by Sears at Columbiana Centre Mall has been solved.

Belk announced Friday a $6.1 million expansion that will relocate its men's merchandise to the 50,000 square-foot building being vacated by Sears later this year.

Just two weeks ago, Sears announced its store and auto center will close in early March because the lease was not renewed.

Construction work on Belk's new men's store is expected to begin in October, 2014 with completion set for March, 2015, the company said.

Selling space in the main store formerly used for men's merchandise will be reallocated to other departments, including home, kids, and ladies apparel, beginning in May, and merchandise fixtures and décor will be updated in select departments with completion set for summer 2015.

"We're pleased to announce the addition of a new men's store and other improvements to enhance our customers' shopping experience at Belk at Columbiana Centre," said Dave Penrod, chair, Belk Southern Division based in Atlanta, Ga. "Not only will we have a totally new men's store featuring the latest in retail design and layout, we'll be building on the great assortments of premium fashion brands for women, men and kids already offered at the store, along with new selections of home merchandise.

"Our goal at Columbiana Centre is to exceed our customers' expectations by offering a variety of retail options while providing a total retail experience," said Tom Dornfeld, general manager of Columbiana Centre. "Belk's philosophy of providing shoppers with quality merchandise and exceptional customer service makes them a great fit at Columbiana Centre and a favorite among our shoppers and the market. We're thrilled they're expanding their selection."

The total combined space of the two stores will be 242,000 square feet.
