Police: Rock Hill gang members using rap music as cover for crimes

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) -

The Rock Hill Police Department announced that they have arrested 12 people they say are members of a violent gang that has been connected to several crimes in the city. After a 6-month investigation, police say the 715 FAM is producing rap music as a cover for their crimes.

"They were trying to use their music as a smokescreen," said Captain Mark Bollinger, Friday.

Rock Hill Investigators said twelve people arrested throughout the day Thursday, ranging in age from 16 to 23 years old, are members of the 715 FAM gang and the 901KOB.

Bollinger said the two rival gangs are feuding.

"A lot of our drive by shootings in the last 2-3 months have involved 715 FAM and 901 KOB," he said.

Those drive-by shootings took place on Walnut Street, Lige Street, Tom Street and the Glenarden Drive community.

"Their roots are here in Rock Hill," said Bollinger. "These are all Rock Hill guys."

They have also committed several armed robberies, and numerous other crimes, Watts said.

Police told WBTV that during the arrests, they recovered more than 60 stolen iPhones that were going to be used in a stolen cell phone ring in Charlotte.

"I'm scared to walk to the store because I think they going to rob me," said David Stewart, a neighbor who lives near some of the gang's recent activity.

"It's scary to think about," said Stewart. "It ain't hit here hard, it hits a little bit around here but it's growing."

The twelve people arrested have a total of 62 pending charges. Eleven cases have been cleared by those arrests, Rock Hill said.

Cpt. Bollinger says the department has received information the 715 FAM is connected to a larger national gang called Folk Nation, associated with Bloods.

For the time being, Bollinger says the department has put a dent in their operation and their rap music.

"Right now their crimes are overshadowing their music," said Bollinger.

The investigation into the gang is ongoing.
