SCE&G warning customers of email scam

CAYCE, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina Electric and Gas is warning its customers about an email scam.

"[There's] a recent email scam that is affecting utility customers across the country," said Emily Brady with South Carolina Electric and Gas. "Our customers have reported receiving emails falsely claiming to be from utility companies, Atmos Energy and Pacific Gas and Electric, saying that they have an overdue account balance. This is not the case, and customers need to be aware and prepared."

Although SCE&G may email a customer regarding an overdue account balance you should not receive account notices from other utility companies, Brady said.

SCE&G also recommends to never give out personal information (e.g., account numbers, account balance, Social Security numbers, passwords, etc.) in response to an incoming call or email. If you have questions about your SCE&G account, call our toll-free customer service line, 800-251-7234. SCE&G does not use its toll-free customer service number to make outgoing calls; only to take incoming calls.

If you think you're the victim of a scam, notify your local law enforcement agency. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs also has a phone line for reporting consumer scams: 800-922-1594.
