3rd person dies, alcohol a factor in I-77 wrong way crash

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A third person has died after the vehicle he was traveling in was hit head-on by a car driving the wrong way on Interstate 77 early Thursday morning.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. in Fairfield County, which is approximately five miles east of Winnsboro.

Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey said the driver of the wrong-way vehicle has been identified as Takeya Taylor of Columbia. Ramsey the investigation indicates Taylor, who turned 28 on Thursday, had been drinking before the collision.

Troopers said Taylor's vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it crashed head-on into a 2012 Hyundai driven by 48-year-old Lisa Denise Jefferson of Charleston. Ramsey said Jefferson died at the scene.

Wallace Green, Jr., a back seat passenger, was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, but died around 9 a.m., the coroner said.

A third passenger remains hospitalized. His injuries have been described as non-life threatening.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
