COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce provides several resources to help jump start your job search.

Career Development Specialists are located across the state to help with:

• free computer and Internet access

• resume preparation

• information on the job market

• searching for a job that matches your current skills

• career guidance and assessment

• access to training classes and workshops

• programs and information for veterans returning to the workforce

• referrals to other state and local organizations that might be able to help during your transition.

In addition to the one-on-one services, all SC Works centers have workshops that range from how to look for work using SC Works Online Services, the state's largest job search database, to marketing yourself to an employer and resume writing.

Each center is different, so you will want to locate the center nearest you and give them a call to find out their workshop schedules. You can find your nearest center at scworks.org.

Who is hiring in the Midlands right now?

Several employers are hiring including Dollar General, Apex, Tool Group, BlueCross BlueShield, Wells Fargo and FedEx to name a few.

How do I beef up my resume?

One way to improve your resume is through the WorkKeys assessment through SC DEW. This is a test in the SC Works centers and, though there is usually a cost associated to take the test, right now it is being offered for free through the SC Work Ready Communities initiative.

This assessment verifies your skill level based on what you can do rather than what you know; things like reading for information, applied mathematics, and locating information. Once you receive a score, you are given a National Career Readiness Certificate in bronze, silver, gold or platinum, which will look good on your resume and increase your chances of landing a job.
