Rutherford Co. issues warning about phone scam

Posted: Updated:

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about a phone scam.

Authorities say a man pretending to be a sheriff's lieutenant who uses the name "Lt. Jeff Johnson" called a woman Tuesday night and told her that her daughter missed jury duty.

He told the woman he would arrest her daughter if she didn't pay him $120.

Sheriff Robert Arnold says there is no one with that name employed at the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office received several complaints about this caller Tuesday night.

Anyone who receives a call like this is asked to try to get the phone number from caller ID and hang up.

"If you get this call, look at your caller ID, get the phone number and call the sheriff's office immediately so we can arrest the person for impersonating an officer," Arnold said.

Call the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office at (615) 898-7770 with any information.
