Winter weather grounds flights at Richmond's airport

Monday's winter storm has forced the cancellation of thousands of flights nationwide. At least two dozen flights are canceled Tuesday at Richmond's airport. That's on top of the 45 that had to be canceled Monday.

It's not the news any passenger wants to come here and find.

"It's delayed until 1:55," Jerry Alderman said about his noon flight.

He even arrived to the airport early to catch a plane to Detroit.

"We thought it's better to wait here than try to get here if it starts snow," he said.

The snow started falling Monday afternoon as more passengers got word - they'll have to wait it out.

Nathan Pickering sent a text to a friend in Newark.

"That I'll most likely be delayed 3 hours," he said.

An airline agent gave him the heads up as a list of delays and cancellations greeted other passengers.

Before the snow, sand trucks were on hand to treat the roads where passengers and employees park. With the weather impacting air travel, passengers spent the day making the most of what they couldn't change.

"It wouldn't surprise me if it keeps getting delayed and then canceled. It's what happens a lot," Lerman said.

"I'm going to find a corner of the floor and go to sleep," Pickering said.

Airport staff urges passengers check their plane's status before showing up.
