WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A 28-year-old nursing aide charged with engaging in a sex act with a 16-year-old patient at a medical facility in West Columbia faces new charges according to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.
Kerston Kyle Turner has been arrested on a charge of unlawfully presenting himself as a nurse.
Sheriff James Metts says Turner "unlawfully induced" a teenage patient to engage in the sex act at the MEDcare Urgent Care Center in West Columbia.
Metts says Turner was examining the boy, and at some point, said that he could give him a special STD test for free that would normally cost hundreds of dollars.
The boy, Metts says, trusted Turner, went to the bathroom with him, and that's where he says the assault happened.
"We believe the nurse just got his sexual gratification watching the young man perform," said Metts.
Metts says Turner then inappropriately touched the boy, resulting in an assault charge as well.
Investigators began looking into the incident after the boy told his mother about what happened, according to Metts.
The original release from the Sheriff's Department indicated Turner was a nurse, but a search of Turner's records indicated he is a certified nursing assistant. According to Maj. John Allard with the Sheriff's Department, Turner should not have been carrying out any duties that a nurse would conduct. One week after his original arrest, Allard said Turner was charged with the nursing charge.
"It was our understanding that Turner was working as and performing the functions of a nurse at the medical facility," said Allard. "Our agency is working with the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation to determine whether the work performed by Turner at the medical facility was in violation of his certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant and whether the work that Turner did was in violation of South Carolina law."
MEDcare released a statement late Wednesday afternoon, saying they were cooperating with investigators, but they would not be releasing any further information.
Turner was arrested on Friday and transported to the Lexington County Detention Center where he posted a $10,000 bail.
Allard said no other victims have come forward in this case.
