COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

One person was taken to the hospital Monday morning after a fire at an apartment complex on School House Road.

Brick Lewis with the Columbia Fire Department says crews were called the Four Seasons Apartment complex at about 7:20 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters say they found heavy flames and smoke.

Lewis says eight apartments have been affected. One unit suffered severe fire damage while the two adjacent apartments suffered smoke damage.

"The house was smoky, there was flames everywhere," said Crystal Jacobs, who lived in the apartment building. "I looked out my window and my neighbor, she was like 'Get out of the apartment.' So I got my kids and got out of the apartment."

Thirty residents were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross says it is helping seven families, including seven adults and 16 kids ranging in age from 3-weeks to 14-years-old. To donate to the Red Cross, call 803-540-1200 or click here.

Power was cut to the building.

Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says one person was checked out and taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.

Investigators say the cause of the fire was electrical and it started near a dryer. Damage is estimated at $115,000.
