House Speaker Harrell hospitalized overnight

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell spent the night in a Columbia hospital after being diagnosed with a respiratory illness, according to a news release from his office Wednesday.

Harrell had been experiencing flu-like symptoms for approximately two weeks before a doctor diagnosed him with the illness Tuesday.

"Because of the persistent nature of these symptoms, they advised me to remain at the hospital overnight so they could monitor my condition," said Harrell in a statement emailed to WIS. "I followed my doctor's advice, and was released from the hospital earlier today."

Before seeing a physician Tuesday, Harrell had a busy day.

At 11 a.m., he met with the media to discuss Attorney General Alan Wilson's decision to hand over a review of ethics allegations against Harrell to the State Grand Jury. The Speaker then presided over the first session of the 2014 legislative session.

Harrell said he was taking Wednesday to rest, but would return to the State House on Thursday.
