City of Memphis handles 770 pothole-related calls a week

(WMC-TV) - The cold snap followed by mild temperatures have cause a peak in road potholes. The key is to be on the lookout.

City, county, and state crews are working day and night to fill the gaps.

"It's awful," said driver Mary Ann Walker describing the dreaded moment when you just did not have enough time to avoid a pothole.

"They cause your car to be out of alignment. They cause knots on your tires."

Pothole repairs caused hours of traffic on Interstate 40 at the flyover Tuesday.

State crews fix highways. Counties cover damage on unincorporated roads, and cities tend to city roads.

The call volume is up.

"We attribute it to what we call the freeze thaw process when we go from severely cold conditions to warmer weather conditions and there's an increase in pothole requests," said public works information officer Matoiri Spencer.

The City of Memphis handles 770 pothole calls per week.

"They're monitoring their routes, they're looking for potholes," said Spencer.

Twelve crews are dedicated to just fixing potholes.

"We try to fill them by the end of the business day. In the event that they are made after the noon hour, we fill potholes the next business day," said Spencer.

Shelby County handles all complaints within two days, and they have averaged 363 potholes per week since September.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation uses many factors to prioritize pothole repairs from the size and condition of a pothole, as well as higher traffic count areas.

If you need to report a pothole you can call one of the following numbers.

  • Memphis: 311 on your smart phone or 901-636-6500
  • Shelby County unincorporated areas: 901-222-2300
  • Highways: TDOT.Comments@tn.gov or 731-935-0100
