Overall crime in the City of Columbia was down by a large margin from 2012 to 2013, according to statistics released by the Columbia Police Department Tuesday.

After two years of increases in the city's crime rate, numbers show a decline of 11 percent in all crimes from 2012 to 2013.

Violent crime, which includes homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, and aggravated assaults, has dropped approximately 9 percent since 2008, down more than 25 percent year-to-year.

The number of homicides in the city rose from eight in 2012 to nine in 2013.

Property crimes are down approximately 9 percent, according to the numbers.

"The Columbia Police Department implemented several crime reduction strategies that were successful in 2013, resulting in the lowest crime rate in more than five years," said Interim Chief Ruben Santiago. "We will continue that momentum in 2014. In fact, there is already a 30% decrease in crime trends so far this year. Our crime statistic guidelines are modeled after SLED and the FBI."

Since 2008, total crimes are down 2.6 percent.
