New numbers released Tuesday show that while the number of murders that occurred in Richland County in 2013 was up year-to-year, violent and property crimes went down.

During a news conference to discuss the most recent crime trends in the county, Lott said the five-year trend shows overall crime is down 12 percent since 2008.

There were 20 incidents classified as murders in 2013, which was up from 15 murders in 2012.

Despite the rise in murders, other violent crimes were down 14 percent since 2008.

Property crimes, which include burglary, vehicle theft, and larceny, were also down almost 11 percent in the last five years.

Despite the numbers, Lott says there's still room for improvement.

"Even though I'm talking about a reduction & a significant reduction over the last year," said Lott. "It's still too much. Many people ask me, 'Well, are you happy?' I'll never be happy as long as we have one victim out there."
