NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A man being held for the murder of his wife died Saturday at the Newberry County Detention Center, authorities announced Sunday.

Charles Butler, 76, was being held on warrants for the murder of his wife, Andreena Butler, 72, in Newberry.

Authorities found Andreena dead in her home on Dec. 21 in Newberry and arrested Charles in Pennsylvania who was extradited to South Carolina on Thursday to face charges.

"On Saturday, Butler was in the process of a tele-visitation when he became disoriented," authorities said. "Correction Officers assisted him from the tele-visitation room in a wheelchair when he became unresponsive. Corrections Officers attempted life saving measures until Newberry County EMS arrived and determined there were no vital signs."

Based on the results of an autopsy, Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton had determined the death was the result of natural causes by cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will conduct an investigation as is protocol for in custody deaths.
