COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The front portion of a school bus carrying children from Richland School District 1 crashed into a sinkhole at Colonial Drive and Lorick Avenue, according to a spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department.

CPD spokesperson Jennifer Timmons says that intersection is currently shut down while Transportation Department workers fix the hole.

Officials say that sinkhole opened due to a 6-inch water main break.

DOT workers have since patched up the hole with a steel plate and removed the bus.

Timmons says the all the children that were on the bus are okay. No word if any of them were sent to a local hospital for monitoring.

Transportation officials say the road will remain closed for some time.

In the meantime, City of Columbia officials say Lorick Avenue from Colonial Drive to Water Street is currently under a boil water advisory as a result of the water main break.
