A 93-year-old man was taken to an area hospital Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle he was driving was hit by a train.

The incident happened near the intersection of Augusta Highway and Wattling Road just before 2 p.m.

A witness said the crossing arms were down and the train was sounding its horn just before the collision at the Wattling Road crossing.

The vehicle spun around violently after being hit in the rear by the CSX train, a witness said.

After the crash, the driver of the vehicle appeared to be in shock, but was awake as emergency responders placed him on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

Troopers say the man is in serious condition.

No charges have been filed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
