(WMC-TV) - The new Southaven administration is working to rid itself of a spending scandal during former mayor Greg Davis' time in office.

Alderman passed a measure Tuesday to donate thousands of dollars of restaurant gift cards, purchased with taxpayers' money, to a local charity.

Instead of being used for wining and dining as during the last Southaven administration, current Mayor Darren Musselwhite wants to see the thousands of dollars worth of city-bought gift cards to go to charity.

"Me being the new mayor, I just felt with the stigma involved with the spending controversy that it would be a good idea to tie up the loose ends and get rid of those cards," said Musselwhite.

That stigma being the state spending case against Davis. State auditors showed receipts where Davis spent thousands of dollars at the Mesquite Chop House running up huge bar bills with excessive tips.

Musselwhite is ready for the city to move forward, but the ten gift cards at $520 a piece, he says, are a reminder of a low period for the city. The cash value on the cards is $5,200, but the Mayor is not sure how much was actually spent on them because they were part of a promotional deal offered by the restaurant.

"We definitely promote the chop house. It's a fine restaurant. We just think there's too much stigma that went with the cards," said Musselwhite.

Instead they will go to the charities supported by the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, once a silent auction is held to trade them for cash.
