Members have options after gym closes 4 locations in Midlands

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Closed, and not just for the holiday. Permanently.

The signs on the front of the four New Life Fitness World locations in Columbia, Irmo, and Lexington let members know Gold's Gym has agreed to serve New Life's members.  When we spoke to Gold's Gym Managers, they tell us New Life members will be allowed to work out for now, but they're still "working out" a contract with New Life Fitness World.

The letter at New Life Fitness makes it seem more permanent, that paid in full memberships will be honored until their expiration date. But when we went digging at the Department of Consumer Affairs we found out there is state law that protects residents in these contract matters if a gym closes.  In fact they have a YouTube tutorial.

Under the state's Physical Fitness Services Act, if the gym closes before your contract expires, you are entitled to a refund.

"If you're on a year contract or even a two-year contract, any prepaid contract, you will be refunded from the time that the gym closed until the end of your contract," explains the video.

And they recommend those with draft payment take steps to cancel the payment. Don't assume your gym will do that for you.

"If you're on a draft on a month-to-month basis and the gym takes an extra month after it's closed  then you are entitled to a refund," says the video.

In this case, New Life Fitness World has made arrangements with Gold's Gym, so members can continue to work out there.  It's too soon to know if there might be additional costs, but if you ask for a refund and you're not getting a response from the company, you can file a complaint with Consumer Affairs and they'll work with you to get you back in shape.

You will need proof of membership, usually a copy of your gym contract to file the complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs.  Gold's Gym told us they hoped to know more Monday when corporate officials come to the Midlands to work through the situation.

If you have questions, you can call New Life Fitness World at (319) 551-7750.
