COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Several thousand people gathered in downtown Columbia Tuesday night to celebrate the city's Famously Hot New Year's Eve. The event is in its third year in Columbia.

Kool and the Gang headlined the entertainment on a stage at Gervais and Main Street with the South Carolina State House as the backdrop. As the clock struck midnight, fireworks were launched from the Main Street on the south side of the State House.

While people celebrated the turning of the last calendar page dancing and partying in the streets, the area's law enforcement agencies were on the streets looking out for drunk drivers.  Safety checkpoints were conducted throughout the Midlands.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office reported seven arrests for DUI overnight New Year's Eve.
