Firefighters in Lake Norman say an afternoon blazed nearly destroyed a $3 million mansion on the lake.

The Mooresville Fire Chief told WBTV that the call came out that the 12,000 square foot home, along the 100 block of Brownstone Drive, was on fire.

The owners are out on town on vacation, but the American Red Cross say a couple was staying at the home. The man wasn't at home when the fire started and the woman was able to get out safely.

According to the fire chief, the mansion was more than half engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene.

Decorative bars on the home made it difficult for firefighters to fight the fire, WBTV has learned.

The flames were so intense, the fire chief said, that firefighters took defensive action when fighting the blaze.

Several fire boats were called out from Lake Norman to help attack the blaze from multiple angles.

The fire grew to a 2-alarm fire, according to officials. The fire chief says this is one of the worst fires he's seen in nearly 26 years.

Firefighters were able to save multiple cars at the home but say most of the home was destroyed.

The family has been notified and is traveling home.
