COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting at a Richland County deputy following a car chase through a residential area on New Year's Eve.

Richland County Sheriff's Department's Fugitive Task Force arrested Dexter Fuller on December 31 without incident.

Sheriff's department spokesperson Sergeant Curtis Wilson says the incident started shortly before 1:00 a.m. when the deputy spotted a car which was stolen from Candlelite Drive in Bluff Road area.

The deputy attempted to pull Fuller over and a short chase ensued, according to Wilson.

When the vehicle stopped on Crestlite Drive, Fuller fired shots as the deputy approached, investigators said. The deputy was not hit.

Fuller drove away and crashed on nearby Camino Court, investigators said. He was taken into custody Tuesday evening.

Fuller has been transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He is charged with attempted murder and failure to stop for blue lights.
