Troopers cracking down after deadly year on Aiken Co. roads

"Right now we're down 126 fatalities statewide, so we want to make sure that number doesn't increase over the new year," said Lance Corporal Judd Jones with South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jones and his fellow troopers are keeping their eyes peeled as 2013 comes to a close.

"We're going to be out, along with other law enforcement agencies, to make sure we curtail impaired driving," he said. "That's still the number one cause of fatalities."

Aiken County is no stranger to deadly wrecks. Troopers said our area saw dozens of traffic fatalities over the course of the last year.

But, the numbers are down statewide. Just more than 700 people died on Palmetto State roads in 2013 so far. Troopers said they want that downward trend to continue.

"It's the holiday season," explained Jones. "We want everybody to come out, have a good time...take some responsibility, have some self-responsibility for yourself."

Troopers said if you're out on the roads and see someone driving recklessly, don't be afraid to pick up the phone and call 911.

"The public has more eyes than we have," said Jones. "We need all the help we can get. Get a travel direction, a description of the vehicle...and the tag if you can."
