MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
As 2013 comes to an end, Torian Mays can only hope that Montgomery will see less violence in the new year.
Her son, 20-year-old Tim Hamilton, was shot twice at Centennial Bar and Grill Saturday. Gunfire claimed two lives and wounded five others. He remained in critical condition Monday at Baptist Medical Center South.
Montgomery police officers and paramedics responded to Centennial Bar and Grill in the 900 block of Highland Avenue at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 28 on the report of multiple people shot. Inside the nightclub, they located 21-year-old Kimberle Johnson and 22-year-old Glenn Thomas, a rising star in the rap world known as "Doe B," with gunshot wounds. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene; Thomas was transported to Baptist Medical Center South where he was later pronounced dead. Six additional victims, including Tim Hamilton, were located with gunshot wounds. All were transported from the scene or by personal vehicle to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
"During the shooting, bullets pierced his upper right chest, lower right side- it pierced his lung, liver and kidney," Hamilton's mother told WSFA.
A constant by her son's bedside, she's confident he'll recover. Hamilton underwent his fourth surgery Monday night. He has been heavily sedated but his mother says he can hear words of encouragement from his loved ones.
"My son is going to pull through. He already has pulled through. He's healed in Jesus' name," she said. "I'm saying prayers not just for my child but for all those who have left this city."
But Hamilton's family says the city also has a lot of healing to do in the wake of 49 homicides recorded this year.
Hamilton, a fan of rapper Doe B, was enjoying a night out with friends and his family says it should never have ended the way it did.
"This is supposed to be the season to be jolly but in the last two weeks, we've had more tragedy and had more things happen and it's taken all of the spirit out. Stop killing! Put the guns down," said Hamilton's cousin, Quanda Jones. "We need to find Jesus."
His relatives are calling for better security at local bars and clubs.
"This is a very bad tragedy that happened to this city and it's happened quite often. We as parents have to get together and stop this violence... I'm most concerned with the young mothers. We need to be teaching our sons. And not only them- the fathers, the grandfathers, the ministers of this community. You know, family. We just need to be important to each other and right now, that's not what's happening," Mays added. "We need to come together as a community and stop this violence."
Another victim injured in the shooting was also recovering at a hospital Monday. Police say the other wounded victims were treated and released from area hospitals.
MPD detectives have charged Jason McWilliams, 25, of Montgomery, with two counts of capital murder. McWilliams turned himself in to MPD detectives late Sunday evening, officials said. Following his arrest, he was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond.
Police said their investigation indicates that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between McWilliams and Thomas.
McWilliams' family told WSFA that he is innocent and that he had made amends with Doe B.
