MCLEAN CO., KY (WFIE) -

Investigators are still trying to find out what caused a weekend fire at the Green River Apartments in McLean County. The deputy state fire marshal says it appears to be accidental.

Since the fire, there's been an overwhelming response from the community to help those who lost their homes and belongings.

John and Christy Davis were woke by a knock in the middle of the night.

"My sister knocking on the door hollering, 'Get up. Get up. The building is on fire.' She went around to all the other apartments," John said.

The couple was forced to leave the building without having time to grab anything. The fire ended up destroying all of their belongings and leaving them homeless.

But a new beginning is coming for the couple. The McLean County community has rallied around the survivors of the fire and stuffed almost every room of St. Sebastian Church with donated items.

"It is just amazing that there are still so many people out here in the world that do care about each other. I was so overwhelmed what the community and surrounded counties did do," Christy said.

The church says volunteers have been working non stop over the last few days, collecting donations. They say they answered around 200 phone calls of people asking how they can help the survivors.

"I hope that eventually one day I can return the favor and donate items to someone else that is in need to," John said.

The church says the best way to help out now is by giving a cash donation. The money will be used to help pay for the survivors rent and utilities.
