Sentences reduced for trio convicted of killing Mt. Pleasant couple

ST. MAARTEN (WCSC) -

Three men convicted in the murder of a Mt. Pleasant couple in the Caribbean received reduced sentences Monday following an appeals hearing.

Meyshane Johnson, Jamal Jefferson Woolford and Jeremiah Mills went before a St. Maarten judge Monday afternoon.

According to St. Maarten Solicitor General Taco Stein, original sentencing was reduced for all three suspects.

Meyshane Johnson was charged with two counts of murder, and was sentenced to 30 years to life, Jamal Woolford was acquitted of two charges and will serve 18 years, and Jeremiah Mills was acquitted of one charge and will serve 35 years behind bars.

In May, the three were sentenced in connection with the September 2012 deaths of Mike and Thelma King of Mt. Pleasant.

The judge originally sentenced Johnson to life in prison for the killings. Johnson was found guilty of six charges, including two counts of murder. Woolford was originally was sentenced to 22 years and Mills was given 28 years for their roles in the incident.

Stein could not confirm which charges were dropped at this time.

Johnson still claims loss of memory while Mills and Woolford both claim they left the apartment before any violence took place. Investigators say the Kings were found tied up and brutally stabbed in their home.
