WIS Year in Review: Hitting the jackpot in the Palmetto State

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina has been a pretty lucky place to play the lottery the past few years. Just months ago, all eyes were on Lexington where one of the biggest jackpots in Powerball history was won.

The winner went to a convenience store for a pack of hot dog buns but they didn't sell those. Instead he left with a $400 million winning lottery ticket.

On Sept. 18 a Murphy's gas station sold the winning ticket and it wasn't before media outlets from across the Southeast descended upon the scene. It was actually the second time a Murphy's gas station sold a winning ticket in South Carolina.

"There's a lot of zeroes on that check!" said Paula Harper Betha with the South Carolina Education Lottery.

We still don't know the identity of the person who won the fifth largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history. That's because South Carolina is one of only six Powerball states that allow winners to remain anonymous.

The odds of winning the lottery is about 1 in 175 million.

Powerball is played in 43 states, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
