MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The man charged in the shooting of an Orange Mound pawn shop owner appeared in court for the first time Monday.

Charles Griffin, who is charged with first degree murder, appeared in court for mere minutes and was told by the judge to come back when he has a lawyer.

Surveillance video taken in Lamar Jewelry and Pawn captured the robbery and shooting that left Virak Hean dead. Shortly after some of that footage was released, Griffin was arrested.

According to court records, Griffin is a convicted felon and has served time behind bars multiple times. Arrest records show he is unable to stay out of trouble.

While he was an inmate in 2004, Griffin was re-arrested four different times for allegedly exposing himself to female corrections officers.

In March 2006 and September 2008, he was arrested on assault charges for punching other inmates in the face.

On February 2, 2005, police say Griffin punched a guard in the face.

And on March 29, 2007, he was arrested on another assault charge for punching another corrections officer.

According to the affidavit of complaint, the officer fell, hit his head on a metal seat, got black eyes, a bloody nose, and went to the hospital in an ambulance after a nurse noted "his speech was slurred and (he) had difficulty comprehending simple questions when asked."

Griffeiis being held in jail at 201 Poplar without bond.

The judge told him to return December 30 with an attorney.
