SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

Police in Sumter are working to catch the people responsible for a string of break-ins in one neighborhood.

Police say they have increased patrols along Miller Road and North and South Pike West areas off U.S. 76/378. Between October 28 and December 9th, 26 break-ins or attempted break-ins have been reported in the area.  Those incidents are up from 14 during the same time period last year.

Police say most of the incidents occurred during the day when people are at work.

But police say they can't stop the crime alone.  They ask anyone who sees anything suspicious, such as a strange vehicle, or someone walking down the road carrying a television or laptop computer, to call 911.

To prevent becoming a victim of a break-in, police recommend engraving valuables with identifying initials or numbers, photographing valuable items and consider extra insurance on them, becoming familiar with neighbors and their vehicles, and be on the lookout for suspicious people or vehicles.

If you have any information that can help officers make an arrest, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-Crime-SC.
