WIS GM: "Merry Christmas," not "Happy Holidays"

Posted: Updated:

The following Perspective is an expression of opinion by the Editorial Board at WIS, and presented by General Manager Donita Todd:

We all love this time of year, the parades, the concerts, the parties, and, of course, the shopping.

As you wrap up your last-minute shopping, please think about buying from local merchants.  Supporting locally-owned businesses allows you to pay it forward, keeping money in the local economy and keeping local business owners in business.

Recent studies show that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the city's tax base three times the amount generated by a national chain or franchise store.

When you do the math, it's easy to understand why it's so important to keep those dollars in the local economy by shopping and eating at locally-owned businesses.

And while we're on the subject of the season, let me say Merry Christmas.  Not "happy holidays," not "seasons greetings," but Merry Christmas.  While merchants, online vendors and catalogs hawk their Christmas gift items, why are they so afraid they will offend someone by using the word Christmas?  Who do they think is more likely to buy those Christmas presents than those of us who celebrate Christmas?

So I say "Merry Christmas", and don't forget to shop locally.

That's my Perspective.
