MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Shelby County mother sits in jail while her infant fights an addiction to cocaine.

The child is a year old. Investigators arrested his mother for giving birth while on cocaine.

Police say they filed a warrant for Sophia Jackson's arrest last year but that she managed to elude arrest until Monday.

Next door to bulldozers and backhoes stands a single apartment building where deputies arrested a woman one neighbor described as goodhearted.

Authorities locked Jackson up without bond. She is charged with reckless endangerment and accused of giving birth a year ago to a baby that had cocaine in his system.

According to the Shelby County Health Department there is no historical statistical analysis locally because it was prenatal cocaine exposure a reportable factor until this year.

The health department is still gathering cases reported thus far in 2013.

Hospital officials at The MED say under five percent of their deliveries per year test positive for maternal substance abuse of any kind, not just cocaine. Also, they are required to report any case of infant withdrawal symptoms to the state.

A Google search of prenatal cocaine exposure offers countless results with varying conclusions and some agreement that it is not as harmful as prenatal alcohol exposure.

As for Jackson she has a long history of arrests including some that are drug related in Shelby County.

Court documents indicate the child is now in Department of Children's Services care.
