COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - It's been 11 days since surgeries stopped at Dorn VA Medical Center, and as of today, the problem still isn't fixed.
This is the second time since October the surgical suites have been shut down at Dorn because of particulate matter found in what should be a sterile environment.
We know the repairs with the air filtration system at Dorn continued Monday.
It was another mechanical breakdown of the operating room air handling system that stopped surgeries Dec. 5. The operating room had only been up and running three full days after problems were identified in October. That's when it was discovered two HEPA filters had disintegrated, the VA says, putting particulate matter into the sterile operating room environment.
Problems with a heat coil were also identified at that time and repaired. VA officials still haven't identified what the problem is this time.
The VA has continued to apologize for the delay to veterans and their families. The VA has not revealed how many people have been affected by the delays.
