CCU Board of Trustees approves tobacco-free campus initiative

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF)- Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees approved an initiative that will make its campus smoke and tobacco-free. This will include support programs and educational campaigns that will promote healthy living in general.

The University says deciding to go smoke free is a part of a new marketing campaign tentatively called 'Live Well CCU.' The smoke free campus will begin next school year, but when students return from the holiday break, they will begin to see changes. Officials are putting together a web site where students can get information on healthier lifestyles.

"Coastal's mission statement says that we are devoted to developing students that have a healthy lifestyle, so we already have it as a mission so we just thought it was the right time," says Bill Plate, the Associate V.P. of Communications.

The initiative follows national and state trends that show more and more institutions are going tobacco-free. Twenty higher education institutions in South Carolina, and more than 1,100 campuses nationally have adopted 100 percent smoke-free policies.

Beginning in January 2014, smoking cessation classes and other aids will be made available to all members of the CCU campus community. This Tobacco-Free Campus policy will go into effect at the beginning of the Fall 2014 semester.
