COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Sixteen military families in central South Carolina are going to have a brighter holiday thanks to a partnership between the Midlands Blue Star Mothers and Army Emergency Relief at Fort Jackson.

Blue Star Mothers spokeswoman Debee Early says the group of volunteer moms is providing Christmas gifts, ranging from skateboards to clothing, to about 50 children from families in need stationed at the Army base.

The adopted families picked up their gifts Saturday morning at the American Legion Post #6 in Columbia.

She says Blue Star Mothers distributed gifts and met the family members, who were grateful for the help.

The Blue Star Mothers of America is a nonprofit service organization supporting each other and military families.
