High school teacher accused of sending inappropriate pic to student

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A 23-year-old high school teacher is behind bars and accused of sending an inappropriate picture to one of her students in Beaufort County.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office charged Margaret Ann Lamantia of Hilton Head Island with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disseminating harmful material to a minor.

Lamantia was arrested during an investigation that began Tuesday into ongoing contact she was reportedly having with a 16-year old student at Hilton Head High School.

According to authorities, the student's parents filed a report with the school after learning of what they believed to be an improper relationship between Lamantia and their son.

An incident report states that the contact reportedly began at school, where the victim was a student in Lamantia's Spanish class.

Investigators say the two initially exchanged phone numbers just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, and began communicating with each other through text messages.

Between Nov. 29 and 30, investigators say Lamantia texted a picture of her genitalia, through the Snap Chat application, to the victim's cell phone.

According to the sheriff's office, on December 6, Lamantia asked the student to purchase marijuana for her to which the victim agreed.  Authorities say they then arranged to meet on the evening of Nov. 6, with Lamantia picking him up from the Island Rec Center.

At that time, the victim delivered the marijuana to Lamantia, and the two reportedly rode around the island for several hours before the victim returned home, authorities say.

The sheriff's office says after later learning that their son had been terminated from his job at the Island Rec Center for smelling of marijuana, the victim's parents began questioning him.

It was then that the victim disclosed his contact with Lamantia, according to deputies. The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact either Investigator SSgt. B. Chapman at 843-255-3417 or Crimestoppers.
