HHS: 2,700 South Carolinians signed up for insurance

Posted: Updated:

The US Department of Health and Human Services released new numbers Wednesday, reporting nearly 365,000 people across the country have signed up for new insurance plans. Around 2,700 of those were from the Palmetto State.

Tim Liszewski with the South Carolina Progressive Network oversees 18 other navigators across the state. He says when Healthcare.gov initially launched, logjams on the much-maligned website meant his people could only explain and educate folks on the changes that came with the ACA.

But in the past month, Liszewski says the changes made to the website have made signing people up a lot easier.

Liszewski says his navigators have seen a significant uptick in the past few weeks ahead of the Dec. 23rd deadline. If people sign up by that date, they'll have insurance beginning January 1st.

The Progressive Network says they are having to turn many people away, people they say have been left out in the cold when the state legislature chose not to expand Medicaid.

It's an issue Liszewski says they'll be bringing up when the next legislative session begins next month.
