CHARLOTTE, NC (WIS) -

The man accused in a deadly shooting that killed the brother-in-law of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin was in court Wednesday.

Arthur Givens made his first appearance inside a Charlotte courtroom just a short time ago to hear the charges against him.

No cameras were allowed in the courtroom.

Givens' daughter stood up in court after the hearing and yelled, "Love you, daddy," as Givens was taken away. Outside the court, she had no comment.

Givens faces a series of charges including murder and from making threats and assault with a deadly weapon from another incident from back in August. He'll be back in court on Dec. 23.

The victim, 38-year-old Donald Gist, was the brother-in-law of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin. He was shot on Beatties Ford Road in Charlotte Friday afternoon. Investigators say it was not a random act of violence and believe Givens and Gist knew each other.

As of now, court documents show Givens hasn't been issued a bond on his murder charge. The judge said if he gets bond, Givens will be on house arrest.
