Hotel, music venue latest ventures for growth in Vista

More development is coming in the heart of the capitol city that's seen significant economic growth over the last few years.

The Hyatt Place will be the next hotel to open its doors in the Vista, and construction has already started.

Columbia Chamber of Commerce President Holt Chetwood says it's simple: Developers look for successful entertainment districts, and the Vista has a proven track record. As long as this area keeps booming, he says it will keep growing, meaning people will keep coming.

Lisa Small doesn't spend all that much time in the Vista, but when she's there, she says she has a good time.

"Normally come to Jillian's or come hangout with some friends," said Small.

The Vista's attraction, a mix of restaurants and retail, brings in shoppers from across the state on the regular. According to Chetwood, that's why the district is attracting so much attention.

"It's an entertainment district," said Chetwood. "People want to come shop there, people want to come spend dollars in the restaurants and the bars. I think it builds upon itself."

Not only is the Vista getting a new hotel, but the folks who run Tin Roof will be helping to open a music venue close by.

Once open, Chetwood says, it will continue to attract young professionals and college students to the Vista. He says expect the growth to continue.

"I think you'll see continued development around the river," said Chetwood. "A lot of good projects planned for the river front over the next five years. All of that is very exciting. It's something that's long overdue."

Which will do for Small, who says she is happy to see the city growing.

"I think that's great," said Small. "Change is always good, and growth is always a good thing if it brings more people to Columbia."
