PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate sheriff said in a Facebook post on Friday that he would not lower his flag for Nelson Mandela, even after an executive order from the president.

Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said in the post that he refused to lower the flag to half-staff after the death of the former South African president, who died on Thursday. Clark continued to say in the Facebook post that it should be lowered at the United States embassy in South Africa.

Clark said in the post, "Nelson Mandela did great things for his country and was a brave man but he was not an AMERICAN!!!"

This comes after President Obama's executive order to have all American flags lowered in remembrance of Mandela.

Clark did say in the post that the department's flag would be at half-staff on Friday for an officer who died in the Lowlands, and it would also be lowered on Saturday for Pearl Harbor Day.

Here is the sheriff's full post:

I usually don't post political items, but today is different. I received this notification today, "As a mark of respect for the memory of Nelson Mandela, the President orders that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset, December 9, 2013"

Nelson Mandela did great things for his country and was a brave man but he was not an AMERICAN!!! The flag should be lowered at our Embassy in S. Africa, but not here. Our flag is at half staff today for a Deputy in the low country who died going to help his fellow Deputy. He deserves the honor. I have ordered that the flag here at my office back up after tomorrow's mourning of Pearl Harbor Day!

Clark said he ordered the flag to be raised to full-staff on Sunday. He said it would remain that way on Sunday, and that he feels flags should only be at half-mast in Mandela's honor in his home country of South Africa.

"It's just my simple opinion that the flag should only be lowered to half-staff for Americans who sacrificed for their country," Clark said in an interview.

"I have no problem lowering it in South Africa in their country but not for our country," he added. "It should be the people who have sacrificed for our country."

There is no penalty for failure to comply with an executive order given by the president.

Clark said he's grateful to have the right to disagree.

"I think it's great in America we can disagree," he said.
