LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

The driver of an SUV who is accused of causing a collision that took the life of a White Knoll High School student Friday morning has been charged with felony DUI.

A spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol says 60-year-old Michael Gray of Lexington was charged with felony DUI resulting in death and possession of a controlled substance.

Gray is accused of hitting a vehicle driven by 15-year-old Brandon T. Mayo of Lexington around 7:45 a.m. on Old Barnwell Road. The accident scene was not far from the high school.

"He got me through everything, since elementary school," said longtime friend Chauncey Hines.

Hines said she doesn't know what Monday will hold for her after telling WIS she would have been in the gold Pontiac Firebird, with Brandon Friday morning.

"Mom was like no, you can ride the bus this time, you can ride home with him," Hines said. "He was funny, like really funny, and he always cared."

Hines learned her friend didn't make it to class, while she was still on the bus.

The coroner says Mayo died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Troopers say he was wearing a seatbelt.

Gray was taken to an area hospital, but later released and taken to the Lexington County Detention Center.

After learning of the tragic news, students and faculty at White Knoll gathered in a common area of the school to hold a moment of silence for the sophomore.

A spokesperson for the school district says the prayer circle took place during a break between classes.

The accident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Gray appeared in court Saturday where a judge set his bond at $115,000.
