JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

Numerous residents reported booming noises near Sullivan's Island, James Island and the Isle of Palms Wednesday evening.

According to Steve Jaume with the South Carolina Earthquake Education and Preparedness Program, the loud booms and rumbles that residents felt came from sonic booms.

Jaume says graphs show that air was moving before rumbles were felt on the ground.

A sonic boom occurs when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound. This creates a huge amount of sound energy that often sounds like an explosion.

Jaume did not say what may have cause the sonic boom.
