COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A detained man who escaped the custody of the Columbia Police Department at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center has been apprehended, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Department spokesperson Jennifer Timmons says 32-year-old Sidney Eugene Mitchell managed to leave the jail while awaiting medical attention for an unspecified issue around 9:30 a.m.

Timmons says EMS was called and Mitchell escaped while police attempted to put him in the ambulance.

Mitchell was found inside an abandoned home on Bluff Road and was quickly taken into custody. He did try to escape once again, according to Timmons, but was unsuccessful.

Mitchell was initially booked for DUI and resisting arrest, according to the Sheriff's Department.
