Know Before You Go: Week of December 2

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Due to construction on the new Downtown and East End Bridges, construction will affect traffic in the following areas the week of December 2:

Work Currently Underway:

Louisville Streets:

Jackson Street from Jefferson Street to Market Street is scheduled to be closed through Wednesday, December 4 for work on a storm sewer.

Witherspoon Street from east of the Slugger Field parking lot to Clay Street is scheduled to be closed through Wednesday, November 27.

Lane restrictions are expected on Witherspoon Street from Preston Street to Clay Street through Friday, December 20 for utility work and pile driving. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction.

The right lane of westbound Witherspoon Street from River Road to Adams Street is scheduled to be closed through Friday, December 20 for work on a retaining wall.

The left lane of Main Street from Hancock Street to Jackson Street is scheduled to be closed through Thursday, December 5 for work on retaining walls.

The right lane and right parking lane on eastbound Market Street from Jackson Street to Hancock Street are scheduled to be closed through Friday, December 20 for abutment work.

The right lane and right parking lane on Preston Street from Market Street to Liberty Street are scheduled to be closed through Friday, December 20 for pile driving.

The left lane and both parking lanes on Jefferson Street from Jackson Street to Preston Street are scheduled to be closed through Friday, December 20 for pile driving and excavation work.

The right lane and left lane of Liberty Street from Floyd Street to Preston Street are scheduled to be closed through Saturday, December 7 for excavation and demolition work.

Work Scheduled for week of Dec. 2:

Kentucky Side:

Work scheduled for Monday, December 2:

The ramp from I-64 East to I-71 North is scheduled to close overnight Monday, December 2 for temporary striping. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

One lane of I-64 East from I-65 to just east of the I-71 North exit is scheduled to close overnight Monday, December 2 for temporary striping. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

One lane of I-65 South from the Kennedy Bridge to the I-64/I-71 merge with I-65 is scheduled to close overnight Monday, December 2 for temporary striping. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

Work scheduled to begin Tuesday, December 3:

Rolling closures are expected overnight Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4 on I-65 North and I-65 South from the Kennedy Bridge to Muhammad Ali Boulevard for pothole patching. Work will begin around 9 p.m., with all lanes open by 5 a.m.

Rolling closures are expected overnight Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4 on I-64 East and I-64 West from 22nd Street to Story Avenue for pothole patching. Work will begin around 9 p.m., with all lanes open by 5 a.m.

The right lane of the ramp from I-71 South to I-65 South is scheduled to close overnight Tuesday, December 3 for mill and overlay. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

Kentucky Side:

Work scheduled to begin Tuesday, December 3:

Lane restrictions are expected on Floyd Street from Liberty Street to Muhammad Ali Boulevard Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4 for pile driving. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction.

Continuing Closures and Restrictions:

Kentucky Side:

The ramp from I-64 East to I-65 South closed July 15 and is scheduled to be closed through the spring of 2016.

The right lane of I-65 South from the Jefferson Street ramp to Muhammad Ali Boulevard closed July 15 and is scheduled to be closed through 2016.

Indiana Side:

Broadway Street has closed from Court Avenue to 6th Street. This includes the closure of the 6th Street ramp to I-65 North. These are permanent closures.

7th Street has closed from Missouri Avenue to Broadway Street. This is a permanent closure.

VFW Boulevard has closed from 7th Street to 9th Street. This is a permanent closure.

US 31-South (Exit Ramp 1) from Brown Station Way to Stansifer Avenue has been reduced to two lanes.

US 31-South, in the area just south of Stansifer Avenue, has been reduced to one lane. Vehicles are still able to exit onto 10th Street.

The actual starting date and duration for the work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur. Also, given the aggressive overall construction schedule for the project, Walsh DBT may shift work schedules when opportunities arise. East End Bridge construction will affect the following streets in Southern Indiana and in the east end of Louisville:

Indiana: Traffic changes for December 2013 – March 2014

The following traffic changes will occur in Indiana beginning mid-December 2013 through March 2014.

The ramp from northbound SR 62 to westbound 265 will be closed. A detour will be in place for traffic to access westbound SR 265 from northbound SR 62.

The current westbound lanes of SR 265 will be closed with traffic utilizing newly constructed crossovers. All eastbound and westbound traffic will use the current eastbound lanes.

Port Road traffic will be shifted west to the current southbound lanes in the vicinity of Centennial Blvd. and the SR 265 and SR 62 interchange. This arrangement will likely continue for approximately one year.

Indiana: Blasting schedule for week of December 2

Blasting to prepare for the East End Crossing is scheduled to occur in Indiana near Upper River Road and Salem Road, just east of Utica.

The dates and approximate times (within 15 minutes) will be:

Wednesday, December 4, at about 3 p.m.

Thursday, December 5, at about 3 p.m.

Friday, December 6, at about 3 p.m

Kentucky: Blasting schedule for week of December 2

Blasting to prepare for the new tunnel in the east end of Louisville is scheduled to occur near the intersection of U.S. 42 and KY 841 during the week of December 2.

The dates and approximate times (within 15 minutes) will be:

  • Monday, December 2, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.
  • Tuesday, December 3, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.
  • Wednesday, December 4, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 5, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.
  • Friday, December 6, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 7, at about 12 noon (tentative)

Prior to each blast, traffic must be stopped for five to twenty minutes for the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Traffic stops during the blasts will occur on KY 841 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and U.S. 42, and on U.S. 42 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and Bridgepointe Boulevard. In the event of unfavorable weather or other unforeseen activities, blast times may occasionally change. NOTE: A message will be posted on the project web site at www.kyinbridges.com Thursday of each week regarding the anticipated blasting schedule for the following week. Pre-blast surveys are ongoing; no blasting will occur within 500 feet of any residence prior to the completion of a pre-blast survey for that residence.

 

Kentucky: Road Closure on River Rd December 5 - 9

East End Crossing construction activities will result in a road closure in Kentucky on River Road in the area between Wolf Pen Branch Road and Timber Ridge beginning Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. River Road will be reopened on Monday, Dec. 9 at 5 a.m. in the afternoon. This area of River Road will remain accessible to residents who in the in affected area.

Kentucky: Lane switch on KY 841/Gene Snyder Freeway beginning December 5

Southbound KY 841/Gene Snyder Freeway will be shifted east just north of the I-71 interchange and shifted back to its normal route after the interchange via temporary pavement beginning Dec. 5. This arrangement will likely continue for about nine months.
